Water Chestnut Removal

The town's Waterfront Advisory Committee and various resident volunteers have been tackling the increasing problems of the invasive Water Chestnuts (Trapa natans) which render much of our Hudson River shoreline unusable in the height of summer. This year, thanks to a citizen petition led by Sal Colangelo and the Roe Jan Creek Boat Club, our efforts have the attention of a larger audience. On Saturday June 24th, we will be joined by staff from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Capital Region Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) and Assemblywoman Didi Barrett's office.

We hope to clear larger areas and wider paths to keep our waters navigable all season. We hope to apply for a grant for longer term solutions in the future but until then it's all hands-on deck to clear the way by hand.

The event will take place from 9 am to 1 pm at Cheviot Park, Sturdy water safe shoes are required. Please also bring work gloves, water safe sturdy shoes, wheelbarrows and small boats if you have them.
