Municipal Compost is coming to Germantown! Can your farm help?
We are working on a couple of initiatives to facilitate organic waste reduction in town, and we would love your participation! Do you have a farm capable of hosting a compost program? Do you have livestock that would benefit from neighbor’s food waste? Let us know!
COMPOSTING PROGRAM AT THE DUMP
Are you interested in partnering with us on a composting program in Germantown? Columbia County has recently launched a food scraps pilot program which will soon provide the Germantown Convenience Station ("the dump") on Palatine Park Rd with 55-gallon containers for food scraps collection. Community members can drop off their plant-based food scraps during open hours. The county will then haul those food scraps to the location of our choice (potentially your farm!).
We are looking for one farm to partner with us on this initiative and process these food-scraps onsite. This partner would be responsible for meeting the truck and swapping out the full bins for the last week's empties. Our local Climate Smart Communities Committee will help promote this program, and you, the farm, would have access to all (or a significant portion of) the finished compost! In exchange, we hope that the farm partner would engage in occasional community education with our team.
Farm Partner applications are due by March 21st. Please complete the application HERE.

COORDINATING FOOD SCRAPS FOR LIVESTOCK
Are you accepting food donations for your livestock? To decrease the amount of food waste in our town, we hope to provide resources for where food can go before it gets tossed into the compost or landfill. In addition to Food Pantries and Community Fridges, we would like to highlight any Farms that would take food donations for animal feed.
If you would accept food donations, can you please email us back with specifics on what food you would take and how/where people can drop off donations? We will make this list available on our website's resource section and at events.
